Spurgeon: Questions we should ask ourselves

Posted in Self-Audit on November 19, 2007 by Harry

Questions we should ask ourselves:

  • Do I believe in Jesus?
  • Am I renewed in the spirit of my mind?
  • Am I walking not after the flesh, but after the Spirit?
  • Am I growing in grace?
  • Does my behavior adorn the doctrine of my Savior?
  • Am I looking for the coming of the Lord and watching as a servant should who expects his master?
  • What more can I do for Jesus?

  • “Presence of deeds cannot be used to argue the presence of faith, but the absence of deeds can be used to argue the absence of faith.”
  • James insists that a genuine awareness of who Jesus is and what he has done will be evidenced in good deeds and these good deeds are not the foundation of our relationship with God but are the evidence of relationship with God

Spurgeon on God’s Glory

Romans 11:36: “To Him be glory forever. Amen.”

  • This should be the single desire of the Christian.

“Watch, stand fast in faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love.”

  • Examples of lives lived in faith from the bible, ie Moses, Abraham, etc.
    1. Heard the story of God
    2. Trusted the promise of God
    3. Lived in the light of the promise, ie built the ark

  • #3 is critical for faith
  • Ways to make certain you are a man/woman of faith:
  • Knowledge:
    • “Show me God”
    • God has shown himself through creation, the bible, and Jesus
    • In knowing Jesus we know God and this knowledge of God is basis for our certainty
    • Faith is grounded in this knowledge, otherwise faith is worthless, we would just believe whatever people tell us
  • Give mental assent (agreement) to these things of truth
    • Christ compels us to believe against all else, ie our own will, sin, rebellion, etc.
  • Trust
    • Intellectual reasoning is not true faith
    • Devil, demons have intellectual awareness of facts of God, yet they have no faith
    • There must be trust, ie LET JESUS RUN YOUR LIFE

  • “Faith is both a decisive act and a sustained attitude.”

  • Works are an expression of faith
  • In discussing what faith is it is helpful to first describe what it is not
    • Faith is NOT self engendered – it is a gift from God
    • Faith is not a subjective feeling
    • Faith is not a projection of something we want to be true even though it is not, ie it is not a blind leap
    • Faith is not based on feelings

  • J. Clifford Wallace and the San Francisco 9th district court of appeals
  • Johannesburg United Nations Summit of Global Judges Symposium
  • “The Earth Charter”
  • Written by so called “wise people” led my Mikhail Gorbachev
  • from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Charter
    • the Charter has also received opposition from some groups and governments.
    • In the United States and a few other countries, members of the Religious Right have objected to the document on grounds that it is secular, espouses socialism, and contains no reference to the doctrines of Judeo-Christianity.[citation needed]
    • In addition, some conservatives cite an informal comment by Mikhail Gorbachev that the document is “a kind of Ten Commandments”, and point to the fact that at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, a copy of the document was placed symbolically in an “Ark of Hope” — an independent project by the American artist Sally Linder.
    • Some members of the American Religious Right infer from these incidents that the Charter is a proposed replacement for the Ten Commandments, and part of a conspiracy to establish a New World Government that replaces individual National Sovereignty

Spurgeon on Faith

“Untested faith may be true faith, but it is sure to be small faith.”

  • Rituals reminded people of their sin and the they needed forgiveness
  • All the benefits of the blood of goats and bulls was only in so as far as that it fixed attention of the Redeemer and the Redemption to which it pointed – made the necessity of Christ evident
  • Christ was part of God’s plan from the beginning
  • God had chosen the Son as sacrifice for the sins of many from the beginning of time
  • The OT is not faulty
  • Rituals were worthless without an accompanying obedience of life, which none of us can do perfectly
  • Rituals were made to be a reflection of the heart and if the heart was not changed, rituals did nothing
  • Animal sacrifice was coerced on the the altar
    • Animals had no idea what was going on while Christ voluntarily and in full awareness was submissive to the Father’s plan
  • The plan of the father through all eternity was for us to be saved by His own sacrifice, not by our own means, ie rituals, religion, etc.
  • Atonement is the way sinners have fellowship with God
    • Nothing we can do can gain atonement for our sins
    • Fasting, sacrifice for Lent will NOT gain God’s forgiveness
    • Christ’s sacrifice was perfect and all we need
    • We can offer sacrifice not to attract God’s mercy but only as an expression of gratitude that God has given us His mercy
  • OT rituals constantly remind us of our sin
  • Jesus washes our sin, there is no memory

  • OT rituals caused man to look inward and see our sin while pointing to the one time redeemer

TFL: "When Jesus Came, Part A" **

  • OT sacrifices could not take away sin – they were futile, minimal, and external
  • “To give evidence of that death, the earthly priest took the blood of another victim, but since Christ is both high priest and sacrifice, he took only Himself.”
  • Sacrificial death: the virtue of a sacrificial death was needed to for a high priest to enter the Holy of Holies
    • High priest needed a sacrificial death to enter the Holy of Holies
    • Jesus needed it to enter Heaven
  • Value of the OT sacrifices is that it tells us that there is need for a perfect sacrifice, ie the OT priests had to make the sacrifices every year
  • Sacrifices of OT pointed to Jesus this is how OT people were saved by Jesus

  • Hebrews is a difficult book because we do not understand the context
  • The Jews to whom it was written would have understood it very well
  • OT rituals could not cleanse the heart
  • There was not a personal relationship with God
  • from Macbeth: ” Until the day the word of God pierces your soul and you are before your own vanity and saying there is not a perfume in Arabia that can deal with the taintedness on my hands.”
