TFL: “Above All Things” ****

Posted in Bible with tags , , on December 28, 2007 by Harry
  • As created and flawed by sin, we do not know God and no moral endeavors or intellectual pursuits will find God
  • The only way to know God is if God chooses to reveal Himself to us
    • This is what God has done with the bible

Theologians perspective on how God reveals Himself:
    1. General way

    • Available to all

    1. creation
    2. human conscience

    • We have a sense of right and wrong
    • These two are sufficient to bring us accountable to God, but NOT to bring us into faith in God
    • Starlit sky vs. cross analogy: Starlit sky – awe of creation; Cross – brings us into awareness of His intervention for us

    2. Special revelation
    1. Bible – God’s written word
    2. Jesus – God’s incarnate word

    • #’s 1 and 2 are interwoven and cannot be separated
    • We know Jesus through the written word and through Jesus we make sense of the written word
    • This is why until you know the bible you will not meet Jesus and until you meet Jesus you will not know the bible

Psalm 138:

  • Antidote to pride and self promotion
    • Everything begins with God
    • We were created to praise God – SING!
    • If we do not praise God, maybe it is because we do not know God
    • Every single time there has been a revival among God’s people, believers have sung their hearts out
    • Illustration of evangelistic praise
    • Reminder that our walk with God is not without its tests and troubles

    Hymns vs. challenge songs:

    Psalm 138:
    1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart;
before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple
    and will praise your name
for your love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
    your name and your word.
    3 When I called, you answered me;
you made me bold and stouthearted.
4 May all the kings of the earth praise you, O LORD,
when they hear the words of your mouth.
5 May they sing of the ways of the LORD,
for the glory of the LORD is great.
6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly,
but the proud he knows from afar.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
    you preserve my life;
you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes,
with your right hand you save me.
    8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me;
your love, O LORD, endures forever—
do not abandon the works of your hands.

  • Deo Volente = God willing
  • Sin of presumption
  • Planning is okay but planning which leaves God out is wrong
    • We are not the masters of our own destiny
  • In all our plans we are dependent on God and subject to His will
  • God first, God willing
  • God first with my money, talents, brain, my everything
  • And here is what I hope to become here is what I hope to do – God willing
  • The transience of life is not a reason to snatch up all we can

    • “People may die for a conviction, but I don’t see them dying for a concoction.”
  • Peter put his life on the line for this
  • There is no intellectual road to God
  • There is no earthly explanation for the miracle of the virgin birth
    • What a mystery! What an opportunity!!!!

TFL: My Times Are In Your Hands, Part 2, A

Review – with the “my times are in your hands” perspective:

  1. Declare we are not trapped
  2. We are not tossed about in a sea of chance.
  3. We are being trained in the school of God’s providence: God’s providence is the continued exercise of God’s energy where by the creator preserves all creatures and is operative in all that comes to pass in the world and directs all things according to their appointed end
  4. Prosperity should not be the occasion of pride
  5. Uncertainty should not cause panic
  6. Adversity must not become the occasion of self-pity

Thoughts from Alistair about communicating

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on December 20, 2007 by Harry

Thoughts from Alistair about communicating:

* Monday: Mustn’t interrupt anyone today and I must try not to finish anyone’s sentence.
* Tuesday: Don’t use more words than are necessary. Try to speak succinctly.
* Wednesday: Avoid all lecturing and pontificating. Don’t tell anyone what to do or how to do it.
* Thursday: Don’t be argumentative today, contradicting and correcting others.
* Friday: Avoid being “over-definite” in how you state your opinion.

Today is Monday. That means that I mustn’t interrupt anyone today and I must try not to finish anyone’s sentence. I should explain. Some time ago, a friend gave me a series of drills in order to help me become a better communicator. Each day I have something to work on. For example:
It’s usually around lunchtime that I remember the drill and realize to my shame that I have once again failed miserably. Then I recall James’ words, “The tongue is as dangerous as any fire…” and understand why Isaiah described himself (prophet of God that he was) as a man of unclean lips. How often do we find our areas of strength becoming the occasion of weakness! That’s why I’m grateful for the nine members of our pastoral team to sit with me around the table this morning – we need each other to keep us in line.

Today is Monday, and I must conclude in order to begin planning for next Sunday’s sermons. In doing so, I want to thank you for all of your support and encouragement this year. Truth For Life is a large team, and you are a vital part of this team.

On behalf of all of us, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a hope-filled New Year.

With my love in the Lord Jesus,
Alistair Begg

“My Times Are In Your Hands”

  • Psalm 31:15 (New International Version)
    • 15 My times are in your hands; deliver me from my enemies, and from those who pursue me.
  • The way a believer understands the passing of time and the world
  • This is the affirmation of the person who knows himself or herself to be, despite the despair and disasters of this world, under the care of almighty God
  • Nine things emerge from this simple statement (continued on next talk)

    1. We are not trapped in the grip of blind forces

Manna Church: “Christmas Celebration”

Posted in Salvation, Sin with tags on December 16, 2007 by Harry
  • Christmas is centered around two important decisions:
    • The Father decided to save our sins
    • A sin deserves punishment, we deserve punishment
  • Sin cannot be undone by anything we can do
  • Second decision is ours
    • Will we recognize him as our Saviour? and bow before Him? and put Him first in our lives?
  • “Socialized Christianity”
    • Just raised in it, however, a decision must be made
    • We cannot be saved by anything done to us

  • Pg 85
    • “Ultimately what sent Christ there (to the cross) was neither the greed of Judas, nor the envy of the priests, nor the vacillating cowardice of Pilate, but our own greed, envy, cowardice, and other sins, and Christ’s resolve in love and mercy to beat their judgement and so put them away.”
    • Grace = love to the undeserving
  • Pg 86
    • Christ purchased our salvation with His own blood
    • There is nothing more we can contribute
    • We must only fall before the cross, confess our sin, and thank him

Death

  • 1 Thessalonians 4
    • 13Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage each other with these words.
  • Death is often connected with sleep throughout OT an NT
  • Sleep is adequate way to describe the body following death, however, the soul remains conscious
  • Luke 16:19
    • The story of the rich man and Lazarus
    • Jesus clearly taught that after death there would be an immediate perception of pain or bliss
    • You will know if you are with Jesus or without Jesus
  • Luke 23:43
    • Man on the cross
    • “Today you will be with me in paradise.”

TFL: "Sexual Purity, Part 2" *****

Posted in * Favorites, Temptation with tags on December 12, 2007 by Harry
  • 1 Thessalonians 4
    • Living to Please God
    • 1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4that each of you should learn to control his own body[a] in a way that is holy and honorable, 5not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; 6and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. 7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
  • verse 4: control our bodies, keeping them pure, and treating them with respect ‘holy and honorable’
  • Principle: in learning to control our own bodies as men in the matter of sexuality there will be only one outlet – marriage
  • Romans 6:13
    • 11In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
  • Stott:
    • Sex has a God given context, namely heterosexual marriage
    • It is therefore forbidden in any other context, regardless
    • Outside of marriage it is called fornication
    • Violation in sex before marriage
    • Violation in adultery
    • Violation in homosexuality
    • Single people must accept this apostolic teaching; Single people will not become frustrated if God’s standard is embraced, only if rebelled against
  • Marriage is not a form of legalized lust
    • Big difference between treating someone as a possession and treating someone with honor ,respect and fulfilling their needs
  • If we begin to focus the clear things to which God has called us, ie suffering, service, sacrifice, and salvation, then many other things which are our pre-occupation will fall into line

  • Pleasing God is a necessity
  • We were created for Him, not Him for us
  • Paul speaks the word of God
  • Our living with parameters is seeking to please God
  • Thessalonians chapter 4, Paul addresses sex, work, and death
  • Paul was writing from Corinth to Thessalonica
    • the temple of Aprhodite was at Corinth
  • Thessalonica was not much better
    • worship of Cabeeree (?sp) included immoral rites
  • Being sanctified means being sest aside for god
    • A change from what you were
  • One day we will be saved from sin’s presence and in the moment we are being saved from sin’s power
  • Being redeemed by the Grace of God we are saved from sin’s penalty
  • John 17
    • As much as were are compromised by the world, how do we become sanctified?
    • Avoid sexual immorality – make it a clean cut
    • Abstinence not moderation
    • All things are lawful in moderation, but not evil things
