Spurgeon on Fleeing Temptation

Posted in Temptation with tags on August 11, 2009 by Harry

spurgeon“He left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.” -Genesis 39:12

In contending with certain sins there remains no mode of victory but by flight. The ancient naturalists wrote much of basilisks, whose eyes fascinated their victims and rendered them easy victims; so the mere gaze of wickedness puts us in solemn danger. He who would be safe from acts of evil must haste away from occasions of it. A covenant must be made with our eyes not even to look upon the cause of temptation, for such sins only need a spark to begin with and a blaze follows in an instant. Who would wantonly enter the leper’s prison and sleep amid its horrible corruption? He only who desires to be leprous himself would thus court contagion. If the mariner knew how to avoid a storm, he would do anything rather than run the risk of weathering it. Cautious pilots have no desire to try how near the quicksand they can sail, or how often they may touch a rock without springing a leak; their aim is to keep as nearly as possible in the midst of a safe channel.

This day I may be exposed to great peril, let me have the serpent’s wisdom to keep out of it and avoid it. The wings of a dove may be of more use to me to-day than the jaws of a lion. It is true I may be an apparent loser by declining evil company, but I had better leave my cloak than lose my character; it is not needful that I should be rich, but it is imperative upon me to be pure. No ties of friendship, no chains of beauty, no flashings of talent, no shafts of ridicule must turn me from the wise resolve to flee from sin. The devil I am to resist and he will flee from me, but the lusts of the flesh, I must flee, or they will surely overcome me. O God of holiness preserve us like Joseph, that we may not be seduced by the subtle, vile suggestions of the temptress. May the horrible trinity of the world, the flesh, and the devil, never overcome us!

IN THE WORLD YOU WILL HAVE TRIBULATION.    0 John 16:33
Are you asking why this should be, believer? Look upward to your heavenly Father, and behold Him pure and holy. Do you know that you are one day to be like Him? Will you easily be conformed to His image? Will you not require much refining in the furnace of affliction to purify you? Will it be an easy thing to get rid of your corruptions and make you perfect even as your Father in heaven is perfect? Next, Christian, turn your eye downward. Do you know what foes you have beneath your feet? You were once a servant of Satan, and no king will willingly lose his subjects. Do you think that Satan will leave you alone? No, he will always be at you, for he “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8)“‘ Expect trouble, then, Christian, when you look beneath you. Then look around you. Where are you? You are in enemy country, a stranger and an alien. The world is not your friend. If it is, then you are not God’s friend, for whoever is the friend of the world is the enemy of God. Be certain that you will find enemies everywhere. When you sleep, remember that you are resting on the battlefield; when you travel, suspect an ambush in every hedge. As mosquitoes are said to bite strangers more than natives, so the trials of earth will be sharpest to you. Lastly, look within you, into your own heart, and observe what is there. Sin and self are still within. If you had no devil to tempt you, no enemies to fight you, and no world to ensnare you, you would still find in yourself enough evil to be a sore trial to you, for “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick. (Jeremiah 17:9)– Expect trouble then, but do not despair on account of it, for God is with you to help and to strengthen you. He has said, “call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me. (Psalm 50:15)

  • note the last sentence “call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me”
    • We are not promised that our trouble will be removed, but only that we will glorify Him
    • Many think that the Christian walk will be trouble-free, but we are not promised this – Jesus said “in the world we will have tribulations” (John 16:33)
    • In trials our faith is tested and it can be the opportunity for our greatest testimony and ministry

  • Hebrews 12
  • 1. Keep strong and keep straight
    • Referring to Is 35:3 where the prophet describes holiness and peace
  • 2. Pursue harmony and holiness
    • Do not compromise holiness for harmony with others
    • We must me different: There must be a change of heart so that people can say that this person is different and is not just the same as us with an interest in holy things
  • 3. Grow in grace and not in bitterness
    • We may miss the grace of God by the soil on our own souls, for example: bitterness, envy, etc.
    • If we miss God’s grace, it is not because it is not accessible to us, it is that we are not availing ourselves to it (not taking the opportunity God has given us)
    • Physical appetite meant more to Esau than his birthright so that he sold out in a moment for immediate pleasure
    • Every inroad that sexual immorality would make into our hearts and minds is to be resisted; Not in order that God may accept us, but because we are aware that God in His grace has accepted us
    • Just “see to it” that this garbage can of immorality is out of your life (analogy of kids being told to take the garbage out)
    • We are not taken to heaven because of our see to list, we are taken to heaven on the basis of His son and we are “seeing to it” because that is what good sons and daughters do
  • 4. Don’t quit
  • Mt. Sinai: Represents the giving of the Law
    • Legalism
  • Mt. Zion
    • Represents the coming of the gospel and Jesus Christ
    • You were at Mt. Sinai before
    • You were afraid of God
    • You were doing all these things because you thought God would accept you for doing them
    • You were trying to earn your own way to heaven
  • When you came to Mt. Zion it suddenly made sense to you
    • We do not have to earn our way to heaven
    • Jesus died on the cross and we go to heaven on the strength of what he has done – this was radical for the readers of Hebrews
    • You cannot do it on your own, we need Jesus
    • You are right there – don’t quit – it is there available to you
  • 5. “see to it that yo do not refuse him who speaks
    • The prophets were ignored by people for ages because they did not tell people what they wanted to hear
    • We want to go to church and have a nice time
    • If God did what he did to those who did not receive the prophets what lays in store for those who do not accept His son
  • 6. Worship God in awe

  • 1 Thessalonians 4
    • Living to Please God
    • 1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4that each of you should learn to control his own body[a] in a way that is holy and honorable, 5not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; 6and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. 7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
  • verse 4: control our bodies, keeping them pure, and treating them with respect ‘holy and honorable’
  • Principle: in learning to control our own bodies as men in the matter of sexuality there will be only one outlet – marriage
  • Romans 6:13
    • 11In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
  • Stott:
    • Sex has a God given context, namely heterosexual marriage
    • It is therefore forbidden in any other context, regardless
    • Outside of marriage it is called fornication
    • Violation in sex before marriage
    • Violation in adultery
    • Violation in homosexuality
    • Single people must accept this apostolic teaching; Single people will not become frustrated if God’s standard is embraced, only if rebelled against
  • Marriage is not a form of legalized lust
    • Big difference between treating someone as a possession and treating someone with honor ,respect and fulfilling their needs
  • If we begin to focus the clear things to which God has called us, ie suffering, service, sacrifice, and salvation, then many other things which are our pre-occupation will fall into line

  • Pleasing God is a necessity
  • We were created for Him, not Him for us
  • Paul speaks the word of God
  • Our living with parameters is seeking to please God
  • Thessalonians chapter 4, Paul addresses sex, work, and death
  • Paul was writing from Corinth to Thessalonica
    • the temple of Aprhodite was at Corinth
  • Thessalonica was not much better
    • worship of Cabeeree (?sp) included immoral rites
  • Being sanctified means being sest aside for god
    • A change from what you were
  • One day we will be saved from sin’s presence and in the moment we are being saved from sin’s power
  • Being redeemed by the Grace of God we are saved from sin’s penalty
  • John 17
    • As much as were are compromised by the world, how do we become sanctified?
    • Avoid sexual immorality – make it a clean cut
    • Abstinence not moderation
    • All things are lawful in moderation, but not evil things

  • Luke 9:25
    • 25What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?
  • Forces us to think about our existence and whether we are living life for ourselves or someone or something else
  • If we regard life as nothing more than our physical frame and if we are consumed with getting out of it everything we can, then Jesus says we lose life in the fullest sense
  • We are existing without living
  • Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes
    • Pleasures of the flesh are like salt water, the more you partake the more you want and it dries your insides out
  • Possessions
  • Jesus explains how to be His follower:
    • 1. Come after as your rescuer and ruler
    • 2. Deny yourself: Get off the throne of your life, enthrone me
    • 3. Take up your cross everyday and follow me: Deny to yourself everyday

Review of series so far:

  • Sovereignty of God
    • Foundation of who God is
    • All other attributes of God depend on this
  • Holiness of God
    • We model ourselves after God
  • Guidance of God
    • How guidance of God is our rudder and how all decisions we make must depend on God

  • Salvation is a permanent gift
    • It could not be taken away once given
  • Does not mean we will not be attacked, danger will be greater as the evil one strives harder
  • If we were on our own, we would be in trouble, but nothing is greater than the keeping power of God
  • We will still sin until we get to heaven
  • We cannot tolerate sin without repentance
